Simple Machine Reading Activity

Term 3 Week 1
This week we have been learning about simple machines and the different types. Our reading activity was to understand Simple Machines.
WALT:

Activity 1
Vocabulary

Electricity- Is a form or source of power which helps something move or change.
Generators- It is a item or machine that gives one form of energy to another.
Hydroelectric-  puts its energy as distribution to other different types of energetic sources.
Dams- Is like a barrier stopping water from going somewhere or other types of liquids.
Energy- Giving power to make something happen or to perform an activity.
Transformation- changing someone or something in form or either appearance.
Water- A liquid that is used in lots of things especially for hydrating something or someone.
Kinetic Energy- Giving energy to a body or system while following correct movements.

Activity 1
List 10 electrical appliances we use in our everyday life.
-Fridge
-Kettle
-Heater
-Charging station
-Laptops
-Phones
-WiFi
-Power Points
-Lights/Street Lights
-Security Doors/ Gates

Activity 2
How would our lives be different without electricity?
- All of our washing would have to hand washed as washing machines are powered with electricity, cook would also be impossible, unless your having an outside fire as ovens are heated by electricity.

Activity 3
What sort of activities would be impossible  without electricity?
-Playing online games requires internet, internet requires electricity.

Activity 4
Where does New Zealand get its electricity from?
-The Waikato River gives a power source which powers some of the power stations in New Zealand.

Activity 5
Why is burning fossil fuels to generate electricity a problem?
-Fossil Fuels are not efficient and also use more resources than other type of fuels.

Activity 6
How can we get electricity without harming the planet?
-We could somehow get water to power some things that we use in everyday life. Using power stations is a fair choice, as it gives electricity but doesn’t let out any gases that would affect the planet. They are also called power plants. Power Plants or Stations are also useful as they let out greenhouse gases.
